NeuralgiaThe most common form of neuralgia is Trigeminal Neuralgia which affects the face. Depending on which branch(es) of the nerve are effected a strong pain will be felt in the jaw, cheek and/or forehead. Attacks are difficult to predict and can be very frequent, or may be weeks or even months or years apart. Postherpetic neuralgia occurs after having had shingles, with 25% of shingles sufferers over 60 going on to develop postherpetic neuralgia (it is much less common in the under 60s.) It causes a rash and pain in bands across the back and/or chest. Conventional treatment involves taking painkillers and sometimes anticonvulsant medication or surgery. Naturally, there are risks with all these approaches, and side effects are common with the anticonvulsant medication (approx 10%) Acupuncture can be very effective in treating the pain from neuralgia anywhere in the body, reducing both the severity and frequency of attacks, and although longer courses of treatment are sometimes required it is often preferred as a natural alternative to chemicals or surgery.
